September 2023 – In September I started a more appropriate training to return to racing after the summer break. Nothing special: I just increased a bit the mileage and the speed in every single workout but I didn’t follow a specific program.
Here the summer months are too hot to stress my body with races. In such period I also avoid the night races because the days are too intense and in the evening I no longer have anymore the strength to compete.
These are the numbers:
Total monthly mileage: km. 154.9 (96,3 m);
Workouts: 13;
Races: 1.
September 1985 (memories): 38 years ago I entered my first race. They were “heroic times”, in my city we could consider ourselves the pioneers; at that time running was not as popular as it is now. It was September 5th and I covered the distance of 7.8 km. (4,85 m) in 39:00. At the start we were only 29 runners. As you can see in the photo I was a bit overweight.
Ronciglione – On Saturday my wife and I spent one day in Ronciglione, considered one of the most beautiful hamlets in Italy. We had lunch in a restaurant where we ate local food. Later we went to relax ourselves on the shore of Lake Vico.

Potato gnocchi with radicchio and gorgonzola cheese |
What a gorgeous little town. And the gnocchi looks fantastic too. Thanks for the retrospective on your running career, but I’m not sure that I recognized you in the first race of your career.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome.
DeleteI put a "white arrow" on my head to recognize me.
Those gnocchi are delicious.
Potato gnocchi with radicchio and gorgonzola cheese look soooooo good
ReplyDeleteVery good and the local potatoes are delicious.
DeleteIt's hard to believe the 80s were so long ago. All the best as you train for fall races! Looks like a fun getaway!
ReplyDeleteYes, it's a long time. Some months before that race my daughter was born and now she is mom of 2 kids.
DeleteRonciglione draws one in with those lovely streets. The view is incredible too. That is a great photo from the 80’s.
ReplyDeleteRonciglione was awarded as one the best 10 hamlets in Italy.
DeleteIt's also famous for its Carnival.
Those winding narrow cobble stone streets are so pretty! You are fortunate to have these places to share special time with your wife. Oh and how fun looking back on days gone by, such a small group of runners compared to how many are at starting lines these days.
ReplyDeleteIn most of the cities in my region you can find cobble stone streets but the most beautiful are in the Viterbo province.
DeleteYes, for running the 80's was another era.
"Potato gnocchi with radicchio and gorgonzola cheese" looks tasty... yummy
ReplyDeleteMy wife made the decision to cook gnocchi with gorgonzola and radicchio at home too.
DeleteQuanti bei borghi dalle tue parti...
ReplyDeleteBuona ripresa delle corse! 👍👋
Come sai qui c'è solo l'imbarazzo della scelta e le gare che ho scelto di disputare fino a fine anno saranno nei borghi del viterbese. Tante salite ma ..... tanto divertimento.
DeleteThat is a nice group photo of the runners. I didn't recognize where you were standing. The town photos are so very beautiful to see. Enjoy your week.
ReplyDeleteIn the photo of the runners I put a white arrow over my head to recognize me.
DeleteHave a good week you too.
I can't believe you have already been running races for 38 years. That is quite an achievement all by itself. The views from your Saturday outing were so lovely. These were such beautiful places to enjoy an extended date with your wife!!
ReplyDeleteYes it's long time. I began to run to lose weight and after I felt in love with this sport.
DeleteI'm glad that my wife shares with me this interests for the ancient hamlets.
Me alegra que siguas corriendo Son bello lugares los que nos muestran. Me dieron ganas de los ñoquis. Te mando un beso
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteYes, gnocchi, are a good, tasty and healthy food.
Interesting to see the photo from years ago and how time flies.
ReplyDeleteThat is an interesting place and also the lake, much wildlife there so I read.
Thanks for the links..the potatoes in all their glory do look delicious.
Sometimes the photos from years ago are a little sad because we can see some friends that now "run in heaven".
DeleteThat lake is little but beautiful and, as you wrote, with much wildlife.
You are not even slightly overweight in that photo! I love it! Hasn't running come a long way since then?
ReplyDeleteJust yesterday a German runner was telling me how she had to run in men's shoes in the 80s because there were none for women!
Many things are changed. I remember, after a race, we had to wait many days to buy in the news stand the newspaper with the total results of the race.
DeleteDifficult to find pictures. We got them by our parents or friends who kindly came to follow the race.
All the material was in cotton and the Garmin (or similar) didn't exist.
And yes, it was a difficult world for women. As you can see in my photo there were no women at the start.
Near my city there are many ancient hamlets where we can spend some hours (or days) in total relax. It's a jump in the past!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful place! I found myself getting out a t-shirt to wear around the house that said "Flora Women's 5k 2000" the other day, and I think that must have been pretty well my first race!
ReplyDeleteCongrats, you are also an experienced runner!
DeleteRonciglione looks like a beautiful place, thanks for sharing your pictures! I love gnocchi and I bet that yours was delicious.
ReplyDeleteRonciglione is one of the best 10 hamlets in Italy. The town got an award for this reason.
DeleteThe province of Viterbo is famous for the local potatoes.
