It's been two years since my last post and it's been a very difficult time, marked by various health problems: some resolved, other stabilized.
Unfortunately, I cannot anymore run competitively, and this month, after more than two years, I returned to race, even if in a no-competitive event. Now I'm only running twice a week, at a very slow pace and no longer than 7 km (4.3 m). The goal is to enjoy running and, for this reason, I'm choosing routes in the suburbs where I can smell the atmosphere of the landscape and the 1960s-style neighborhoods, where all the buildings are surrounded by green parks. In the future, I'll be able to increase my distance, but not my speed, because the "bouncing" could cause problems at my fragile bones.
This was my last competitive race on May 05, 2024: Vetralla a very tough 10 km with a terrible uphill. In the first photo you can see the jacket that I wore for the first time in 1977 when I joined the Navy (in my next post I will say more about this topic):

ReplyDeleteCheers
Thank you. Despite all the troubles I am always here even if older and weaker......
DeleteWonderful to see you back with a post and sorry to read that you have had troubles, may they now be behind you.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to read you can still run even though it's not as far - you are doing well.
The worst is over, now I must be more careful.
DeleteCiao Cav. Tanti in bocca al lupo per tutto!
ReplyDeleteWelcome back. 👋😊
Grazie e, come diciamo noi animalisti, VIVA il lupo!!!!
DeleteWelcome back, Stefano! So good to read a post from you again.
ReplyDeleteThat’s a tough road you’ve been on. Coming back after two years and standing on a start line again, even non-competitive, takes real grit. And I like how you’ve shifted the focus, slower, shorter, but actually enjoying the run and the surroundings. That’s a different kind of win!
In life, we have to deal with age and the unexpected problems. The most important thing is not to give up.
DeleteWelcome back to blogging. It’s a great pleasure to be in contact with you again. Advancing years are not always kind and we have to adapt as best we can - which is exactly what you are doing. Bravo!
ReplyDeleteIt's a great pleasure for me too. Never give up!
DeleteBoa tarde Stefano. Seja bem-vindo ao Blogger. Te desejo muita saúde e brevemente, você poderá fazer suas corridas. Obrigado pelo comentário e sua visita. Grande abraço do seu amigo brasileiro.
ReplyDeleteTi ringrazio per il commento. Un grande saluto dall'Italia.
DeleteI've missed you, Stefano. I'm so sorry to hear the past couple of years have been difficult. It's so great to see you running in any capacity. I'm glad your health issues have stabilized. Running for joy is a total win!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I hope that you and your family will come back to visit us in Italy. Yes, now I have to accept what my body allows me to do.
DeleteWelcome back, it is real good to see you posting again. Running for enjoyment, what a great way to return to an exercise that you love. Sorry to hear about your tough years but those are now in the rearview mirror. Have a great day and upcoming weekend.
ReplyDeleteThank you, the worst is over but I must be careful and I have to check my health.
DeleteGreat to see you back, great to see you´re at it again, if on other conditions. As long as you can still run life is great! Welcome again!
ReplyDeleteThank you. And as a friend of mine uses to say, when I cannot anymore run I will walk.
DeleteWelcome back, Stefano!
ReplyDeleteRunning for the sheer joy of it, surrounded by green parks and neighborhoods, feels like a victory in itself.
Bravo for adapting and keeping the spirit alive!
Thank you ... or grazie as we say in italian language. Running inside the green country and beautiful landscapes is priceless.
DeleteNice to see you back. I’m not running races anymore either and not sure if I will run anymore at all for some of the same reasons as you. We do what we can and appreciate that we can do what we can. Hope you are well :)
ReplyDeleteI am very sorry to read about your problems but I see that you are strong and you never surrender. I fought against a cancer and the osteoporis but I think positive.
DeleteIt's lovely to see you back and well done for getting another race done! I have a place in the Birmingham Half-Marathon tomorrow but won't be running as I'm on 5 miles maximum at the moment (nothing dramatic, just a long run of bouts of Covid, minor injuries and caring responsibilities). I hope you can continue to be as well and healthy as possible.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the 5 miles in the Birmingham Half-Marathon. Take care and get well soon so you can come back to run the whole 13,1 miles.
DeleteAbout myself I can't go back in time so I have to settle for achieving different, much less demanding goals.
Hello and welcome back!
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to hear you had health problems, I hope you are getting stronger every day. It is good to be running again, it is something you enjoy doing. I like park settings more than cities. Take care, have a great day and a happy week ahead!
You and I think alike: park settings are better than cities. I often go there to relax, enjoying silence and the songs of birds.
DeleteAwww it is so nice to have you back blogging and adding comments to our blogs! That is such good news that you found a way to alter your running style and keep the joy in your life that you receive from that sport!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the comment. By getting older I have to change my goals but running remains a routine for me.
DeleteI am so glad to have you back... and even happier to see you are still finding a way to run! You've done such a great job healing yourself and giving your body what it needs to feel good!
ReplyDeleteThank you. Unfortunately I'm not again out of the troubles but I am on the right way.
DeleteIt's so nice to see you back blogging again, Stefano! I'm so sorry to read that you've had health issues and are not able to run competitively anymore. Enjoy those shorter runs and the beautiful scenery of the neighboring parks.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the comment. It was hard for me but now I'm learning to appreciate the "touristic" runs. Moreover I will enter some no-competitive races to enjoy the atmosphere and spending one day in beautiful towns eating local food.
